PRIVATE DOUGLAS FRANK EASDOWN (APR 1921- ). D F Easdown worked for George Angus Oil Seal Products, at St Anthony's in Walker, in the research and sales departments. They manufactured a revolutionary new material and made oil seals for military and civilian purposes. Because of his reserved occupation in 1939 at the age of 18, he joined "C" Company at St Georges Church Hall in 1941 and became a B.A.R. operator in the Battle Drill Platoon. He was also a member of the football team which played matches at Paddy Freeman's park. He also introduced his future wife to "C" Company, Sarah Pentland was part of the administrative staff. WALTER GLUCKLICH 1899 - Walter Glucklich was born in the German state of Saxony. He studied Law and later became a Director of the municipal gas and electricity for the city of Dresden. Because of his origins, he was forced to resign shortly after the Nazis came to power in 1933, and for the next few years earned his living as a financial advisor in Dresden. Early in 1938 it became clear that he would have to leave Germany. He met Stanley Holmes, a representative of the Tyneside Industrial Development Board who was trying to get people like Walter Glucklich out of Germany. He arrived on Tyneside with his family and a friend, Miss Lucas, in Jan 1939 and set up a business making leather belts at 8-10 Percy St and during the war bags for gas masks. He served in "C" Company 12th Battalion. He continued very succesfully in business, Castlecrafts Ltd, after the war and retired in 1963 aged 74.

COMPANY QUARTER MASTER SEARGEANT FRANK HEDLEY MINGAY OWEN (Oct 1892-March 1978). Frank Owen served in WW1 in a Royal Naval Engineering Division. He lived in Kingswood, High West Jesmond and was running his Saddlery business at The Side by the river Tyne when WW2 broke out. He was appointed C.Q.M.S. in the early months of 1940. "This cheerfull prince of Quartermasters, by his devoted and enthusiastic service, was a shining example of the spirit that permeated the Home Guard". After serving the entire duration of the war in this post he went on to build his business "Thomas Owen and Sons" with outlets on Dean street and now Brough Park Trading Estate. PRIVATE ANDREW VALENTINE BATES ROSE (MARCH 1925 - ) Andrew Rose lived at Sixth Avenue, Heaton in 1940 and worked at Dodds Slaughterhouse in Newcastle. He briefly joined "C" Company before being accepted into the Royal Navy as a Seaman Gunner. He saw active service with Combined Operatons in Sicily, Italy and Southern France. In 1943 his LST (Landing Ship Tank) was Torpedoed off Bizerta Harbour, Tunisia. He also served on the battleship King George V. In 1950 he left the Royal Navy and found a job with the Gas Board in Northamptonshire, returning to the North East of England in 1960. LANCE CORPORAL ARTHUR WRIGHT FEATHERSTONE M.M.(FEB 1891- 1954c) Arthur Wright Featherstone was born in Newcastle and emigrated to Canada in 1908. He enrolled in the Canadian Army in Jan 1915 and joined the 49th Canadian Infantry Division. He was awarded the Military Medal and fought in France till he was discharged in March 1919. After WW1 he returned to Newcastle and became a Tailor. In 1940 he volunteered for the L.D.V. and was one of the original No5 Platoon, No 2 Company. He also served in the Street Fighting Platoon. One of three inseparable chums Sgt W Pearson, Cpl J.R. Dickson and Lance Corporal Featherstone M.M., the quiet unassuming member despite domestic worries was regularly on parades, his loyal service being a great factor in the success of the Company. PRIVATE JOHN RICHARD APPLEBY (MAR 1903 - DEC 1975) John Richard Appleby was a part time Pearl Assurance Agent and also had his own Credit Drapers business in Newcastle. He was living in Teviotdale Gardens, Heaton when war was declared. He joined "C" Company until 1941 when he joined the R.A.F. and became an Armourer Instructor. He was sent to Malta to instruct R.A.F crews on a new type of Depth Charge and served out the entire war on the besieged island. After the war he returned to his previous occupation until his retirement. He was a founder member of the St Oswald Lodge of Freemasons.

MISS SARAH (PEGGY) PENTLAND. Sarah Pentland lived in Tynemouth Road, Heaton. When war was declared she worked as a Telephonist in the Fire Station at Headlam St, Byker. She met her future husband, Douglas Frank Easdown at Heaton Congregational Church and together in 1941 they joined "C" Company at St Georges Church Hall, Jesmond. Sarah took up administrative duties, usually on parade days and Douglas joined the Battle Drill Platoon. In September 2007 they celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. CORPORAL DOUGLAS BONSER VENABLES (1915 - ) Douglas Bonser Venables lived in Ravenswood Rd, Heaton and worked at Wright, Anderson Structural Engineers when war was declared. He joined the L.D.V. at Heaton Secondary School and was one of a team of Signalers attached to Headquarters at St Georges Church Hall. He joined the RAF in 1942 and after training became an Air Frame Fitter and was posted to Palestine until 1946 when he was discharged. After he was discharged he found a job as Office Manager with the Wholesale Fruiterer's J.P.Bird in Newcastle, which later became M.W.Mac Ltd in the Team Valley. MISS AUDREY JEFFREY Miss Audrey Jeffrey was the daughter of Corporal R Jeffrey of "C" Company. When war broke out in 1939 she was evacuated to Kendal in the Lake District. She completed her education their and returned to Newcastle in 1940 and found employment at the N.E.R. Salaried Staff Association doing clerical work. She joined "C" Company Administrative Staff in May 1942 and also served in the W.V.S. (Womens Voluntary Service). In 1945 she married Lance Corporal Edward William Moore.

WALTER ICHENHAUSER March 1926 - Dec 1999 Walter Ichenhauser was born in Feurth, Bavaria. His father, Alexander Ichenhauser, owned a brush factory in Nuremberg. The family was forced to leave Germany when the Nazis came to power and they arrived in the North East of England in March 1939. He attended Heaton Secondry School and was evacuated to Whitehaven in Cumbria and returned in August 1941. He attended Durham University, Armstrong College Newcastle, and obtained and Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He served in "C" Company 12th Battalion Home Guard as a messenger, using a bicycle. After the war he worked for Parsons Marine Division. He lived in Israel for several years and returned to England to work for Kodac and then the London Health Authority. He married Margaret Mayer in 1955. KURT KENNETH LION Dec 1925 - Apr 1985 Kurt Lion was the son of Martin Lion and cousin of Walter Ichenhauser. Their families were forced to leave Germany when the Nazis came to power and unable to take any of their assets with them they settled in the North East of England in 1939. With money forwarded to them from a relative in South Africa the Lion and Ichenhauser families established a brush factory at Team valley Trading Estate. Kurt attended Heaton Secondary school and was evacuated to Whitehaven in Cumbria and returned in August 1941. He also attended Durham University, Armstrong College Newcastle, and obtained and Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering. After the war he lived in Israel for several years and returned to England to work in the family business, Lion Brush Works.
