Vernon Vart was born 1894 in Bishop Auckland and was the son of George Vart and the former Hannah Spence.

On 19th November 1914 Vernon Vart enlisted in the newly formed 19th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers as Pvt 19/385. On the 26,11,1914 Vernon married Sarah A Raine and they had a son Stanley Vernon Vart. Sarah A Vart died in 1918. Vernon was rapidly promoted and by June 1915 he had become a Lance Sergeant. By 1916 the 19th was now a Service Battalion (2nd Tyneside Pioneers) and was part of the 35th Division. Trained and equipped the Battalion embarked on the ships Caesarea and City of Dunkirk at Southampton on 28th January 1916, arriving at Le Havre and disembarking on the 29th. By 6th February all units were concentrated east of St Omer. Whilst the Battalion was carrying out typical pioneer work at Rue de Bruges/ Laventie, Vernon Vart received wounds to the left arm and right eye. He returned to England on the 5th June 1916. After recovering from his injuries, on 20th Feb 1917, he attended the Officer Cadet Battalion at Jesus College Cambridge and gained a commision. In December 1917 he was an Acting Captain in charge of a Chinese Company in the Labour Corps and remained in this position until the end of the War. In 1920 he relinquished his commision with the rank of Captain. In 1919 Vernon married Jeannie Anne Leith Doran and they had a daughter, Yvonne Vart b1920.

Pvt Vernon Vart Northumberland Fus WW1.

After leaving the Army Vernon gained employment as a salesman for Robsons the flour merchant, which later became Spillers. In 1940 he lived on Runnymede road, Darras Hall and joined the Home Guard. He was a Major in the 5th Northumberland Battalion (Newcastle Gosforth) O.C. No 3 Company based at Throckley. His son Stanley V Vart joined the RAF in 1937 and was killed in action on 12/04/1940 whilst serving with 50 sqdn.
