Captain Sydney Milton Sawyers (1895-1947)

Sydney Milton Sawyers.

Sydney Milton Sawyers was born in 1895 in Newcastle and was the son of John George Sawyers and the former Ellen Milton Morton. After his education he worked at his fathers House Agents business at Grafton st, Byker. During World War One, Private 647, Sydney Milton Sawyers served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He arrived in Egypt in May 1915. By March 1916 he was part of the 28th Sanitary Section and was serving with the 13th Division in Mesopotamia.

He left the R.A.M.C. in May 1919 and returned to his fathers business. In 1923 he married Edith Winifred Turnbull and they had two sons. In 1924 his father died and he continued to run the business. During World War Two he lived at 21 Jesmond Park West. He initially served in "C" Company 12th Battalion Northumberland Home Guard and was commisioned a Second Lieutenant. He was "C" Company Orderly officer in 1941 and was transferred to Battalion Headquarters in September of that year for special duties. Promoted to Captain he became second in command of the Battalion Head Quarters Company.

After World War two he continued to run his fathers company, Sawyers J.G. & Sons Auctioneers, Estate Agents and Valuers at 4 Market st, Newcastle until his sudden death in 1947 from a brain tumor.

S.M. Sawyers was a founder member of the St Oswalds Lodge of Freemasons.
