Lieutenant Frederick Sylvester Garvey 1895 - 1984
Frederick Sylvester Garvey was born at Bear Park, Co Durham and was the son of Patrick Garvey. He attended Henry Smith Grammar School in Hartlepool and trained to be a teacher. At the outbreak of WW1 he joined the Durham Light Infantry as Pvt 1927, eventually becoming Colour Sergeant. He served in France from April 1915. After WW1 he returned to teaching and taught at St Aloysius school in the West end of Newcastle. In 1927 he married Theresa E Ballantyne in Billericay. He lived at 33 Lemington Gardens, Fenham, in 1940. He joined the Home Guard and was a Lieutenant in the 9th Battalion, Newcastle West, Home Guard and attended parades at the Drill Hall on Barrack road, which was opposite St James football ground. He retired in 1958.
