9th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers Home Guard, Newcastle Central.

9th Battalion Northumberland Home Guard had its headquarters at St Georges Drill Hall, on the eastern corner of St Marys Place and College st, Newcastle.

Assistant Regimental Sergeant Major Frederick William Martin 1903-1955

Frederick William Martin was born in Byker and was the son of William Martin. His father was killed whilst serving in World War One. He attended school in Byker and later worked in the shipyards as a ships rivetter. He married Edith wallace in 1928. He joined the Territorial Army in 1939 and worked at Vickers till 1943. During this time he lived at Clarence Street and was Assistant Regimental Sergeant Major in the 9th Battalion Northumberland Home Guard, Newcastle Central. He was called into the regular army in 1943 and joined the Royal Armoured Corps attending training at Bovington. He saw action at the Normandy Landings and throughout North West Europe. After World War two he was employed as a civilian Forman Gun Fitter at the REME Workshops at Killingworth.
